I have this theory about bloggers.
I think that the ones with the most readers (girls like Dooce, Jasmine Star, Young House Love) are the ones who are the same type girls who would say to me in school “Want to see what’s in my purse?”. What they had in their purse always seemed infinitely more exciting than what was in my own. I would never ever randomly say that to someone, not even my best friend. Their lip gloss or chap stick and whatever else always seemed charmed while whatever I had in mine felt boring and worn out.
So it goes with writing. Those people who have a ton of followers seem to spill their guts or just talk about everyday stuff and we read it. It’s hard for me to think that anyone would care to read about my day to day life. I guess a little bit of mystery goes a long way with me too. So, I’m probably never going to be one of those girls. I’ll probably not list out what I had for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks on my blog and tell you every little thing. That’s just not me. However I am trying to find my voice here. A couple things I do know is that I want to be real. I want to be encouraging. I want to show you the beauty in everyday life that we so often miss. I want to mix up some practical stuff with some really beautiful stuff and some funny, clever stuff. Maybe I’ll tell you a couple secrets and maybe I’ll share my dinner or lunch some days or show you something cool I found. I hope you will want to see it. That’s the fear after all. You know what I mean? If I ask you if you want to see what’s in my purse…what if you say no?
If you notice ALOT of yellow from me on Pinterest this week it’s because … (drum roll please) … I’m guest pinning for Alt Summit on the Color Lovin’: Yellow board! I saw a post about it on Facebook, voluntered and I’m so happy, pleased and honored to join all the all guest pinners! What’s Alt Summit? It’s an amazing resource for bloggers and they have a couple of events each year that I someday hope to attend. If you are a blogger or want to be or just need some design inspiration, definitely check them out.
So here’s some yellow from my Instagram. A photo I took on the first day we moved here to sunny Florida in August. It represents new beginnings to me. Yellow is one of my favorite colors. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it’s sunny and after all those years of living in cloudy Ohio I craved sunshine like you wouldn’t believe. In our last apartment I had one wall painted a bright yellow called “cheerful” and there are plenty of splashes of it around our house.
So here’s to Alt Summit, the color yellow, sunshine and new beginnings for our family and this blog.
One week from today my little Byrdie will be 12 weeks old. One week from today is also the day I would be going back to work….if I were going back to work. That’s the big announcement. I have decided to be a Stay At Home Mom. I don’t have to tell you that it’s a huge decision to go from two incomes down to one.
So that’s the big announcement and here’s the big question…….how are we going to do it? When I started this blog I wanted to write about how to live a beautiful life without spending alot of money. Now here is my chance to really live it out. We are broke. I mean really broke. However, I am not afraid! I know this is the best choice for me and our family and I trust that God is guiding our steps and He will provide. I also know we have to be really smart about this and do our part.
So here we go. This is our new adventure. How do you go from two incomes to one with a new baby and still live a beautiful life. That’s the challenge and I want to document it here. So where do I begin?
Let me just say that I fully realize we have some advantages. First of all we live in the United States and for that we are blessed with alot of resources. Second of all we were able to save up some money while we were both working so we have that going for us. Another advantage is apart from school loans we have no debt (and let me tell you we worked hard to get to that place). Let’s get really practical. Earlier this year I was able to purchase a small freezer full of organic, grass fed beef from a local farmer.
How are we going to make this work? Did I mention my husband is working full time and going to school full time to become a teacher? Did I mention that very soon his class schedule will require him to quit his job and work part time? Did I mention that we will then have to figure out health insurance and go down to 1/4 of our original income? My husband has about a year of school left and then student teaching before he can become a teacher.
This is going to get interesting.
So in addition to the other things I’ve already mentioned in other posts, this blog is about our new adventure. Here’s a couple things we are doing. The first thing I did was apply for WIC. That process is a whole other post for another day! I am clipping coupons and trying to figure out how some women get $200 worth of groceries for $40! I’m also looking for something I can do from home to make some extra money. Who knows maybe enough people will read my blog that I can sell some advertising. (Please?!?!) I’m cooking at home and we don’t go out to eat nonstop like we used to (DINK!). I also still have plans for my Etsy store and for my photography. So there are things on the horizon.
It’s a new day. I believe very strongly in working hard and paying bills on time, we are just adjusting the way we do that these days.
It’s a new day! It’s the 4th of July, a day to celebrate freedom, life and liberty and I can definitely say we are all about that around here. Welcome to my new blog! For the past several years I’ve had a little blog called Word On The Street Is and before that it was called Non Sequitor. It represents many seasons in my life from a single girl living in an apartment downtown working in the music business industry to finding the love of my life and getting married getting out of the music biz and settling down into the 9-5 world. Somewhere along the way during those seasons a little spark of a dream started for a new blog. You are looking at the reality of that dream! After years of day dreaming about it I can finally say…..welcome to Goldiestereo.com.
So let me tell you a little bit about me and how I hope this blog will be different and what I’d like to do with it. First of all I’m Meridith. I’m 36 and married to the hillarious, sweet and wonderful Nathan Smart. We live in a small apartment near OSU in Columbus, OH and we are expecting our first baby any day now! I’m 39 weeks pregnant as of today! Nathan works a full time job and goes to school full time. I am now officially on Maternity Leave from my job as an Executive Assistant at a Marketing Agency. We are on the precipice of so much change and a whole new life so what better time to start a brand new site?? Right?
So, I wanted to start goldiestereo.com for a couple reasons. I have a huge desire to find the beauty in every day life and I firmly believe that it’s possible to live a full rich life of beauty, art, music and so much more without spending a ton of money. With a husband full time in school and a baby on the way we are certainly going to have to pinch our pennies. It will be an adventure to say the least and not to mention challenging but I’m up for it and I’m inviting you to come on this journey with me and hopefully we can all learn and grow as we go along. I’m no stranger to saving money! We planned our own wedding with a budget of less than $3,000 and it was the wedding of our dreams. You can do it too! I’ll be talking alot about that here as I share my wedding with you and the weddings of other friends who had budgets of $3,000 or less. Our apartment is decorated from Craigslist finds and Ikea furniture and I could not be happier with how it turned out. Our nursery was the latest project and it was alot of fun. I’ll be sharing pictures and showing you great deals I find on Craigslist and around the web. There are a ton of Mommy blogs out there that can tell you the best way to save with coupons, I’m just learning about that and I don’t want to create another site like that but I’ll be trying it out and I’ll let you know how it goes. I have alot more ideas too but that’s enough to give you an idea of where we are headed in the months to come! I hope to make alot of new friends here, find old friends and basically make this site a friendly place where new ideas are shared, beauty and love are celebrated and life is lived to it’s fullest. It’s a little scary putting yourself out there like this to share your life and ideas but my sincere hope is that it will be an encouragement to others and that my experiences can be of use to someone else.
Let’s raise a glass and toast to new beginnings today! Thanks for stopping by!!!
